Your Expert Book is your Ambassador

Marketing people
are fond of saying that your book is your business card. That grossly
underestimates the power of your book.

Your expert book
is your meaning. It is your ambassador. It is also the entry-level product
for most of your costumers. Finally, it is a way of letting the world know
who you are, what you offer and where they can find you. As you can see,
even before we get to that "business card" role, there are other,
more important roles for your book.
If you are
considering the important and challenging task of writing a book, it is
essential to examine these reasons in-depth. Just because something is a fad
it doesn't mean that you have to invest your time and money on it.
Your Book as
Meaning
There are many
books published every day, but only a fraction of these books generates a
genuine reaction from the audiences. While marketing is a key factor, and
having a platform for your book is essential, that alone does not explain
the luck or ill-fate of many books. To win the heart of your readers your
book must have a heart.

I don't care if
your book is a business book, a science book or a personal growth book. It
won't touch me as a reader if it doesn't have a heart. Marketing people know
~and often abuse~ the reality that humans, in spite of all our consumerism,
do not seek objects, but emotional experiences. Your book needs to offer an
emotional experience. If it offers only how-to tools, information or dry
knowledge, its market will be limited to your peer specialists. Women,
specially, will be turned off by such a book.
What does it mean,
then, to write a book with a heart? In my
Write to Dreamä System,
I help women experts understand that this means, among other things, that:
Your Authentic
Voice is your Presence. When YOU are present in your book, then
the language of this book is the language of your
Essence. What happens when you don't manage to write from your
Authentic Voice?

Imagine this. You
call a friend and get her machine instead. She has not personalized her
message, and your hear a recorded, alien voice. What do you do? You quickly
hang up and may not even leave a message.
So will your
readers! A reader browsing down the aisle will quickly put that listless
book down. She will not buy it at the store. Believe me when I tell you that
she will not be interested in knowing anything about you.
I recently picked
up a book from the desk of a friend of mine who is an editor. She had
received it from the publishers, announced with the tolling of bells and the
clamor of trumpets. The self-help book was written by a famous Latina TV
personality. The publishers believed, as is their latest inclination, that
the book would be a bestseller simply because the woman had a huge platform.
It bombed. I could
tell why at a glance. The book did not have a voice! It felt as if I was
reading some instruction manual. It was an impersonal personal growth
book! My guess is that either she wrote it without proper mentorship or a
really bad ghost writer did it.
I am a veteran
performer and I can tell you one rule that applies to your book as well as
to stage. Not even your friends will forgive a bad performance. Specially
your friends! The same is true of a book. This is not meant to scare you.
Simply know that the soul of your book is the single most important element.
Don't get me
wrong. Marketing is crucial. In my coaching program

But the case above
illustrates that a book's success is not ONLY about numbers. It is about a
common passion, about connecting with the readers who need what you offer
and delivering what they need with love.
In the case of the
Latina TV personality, her viewers liked her on her show, but they did not
perceive that they needed the book she offered. And those who did, may not
have forgiven the lifelessness of her offer.
Besides your
Authentic Voice, your book needs to create the right mood. Imagine that
you are romancing your readers' minds and souls. A little mood goes a long
way in setting a romantic encounter. Even you, when you sit down to write,
need to romance the Muse. But what is the right mood for your book?
In a non-fiction
book, the mood is created by your Presence as you reach out to
the reader. The mood is how you make your readers feel. It is the atmosphere
created by your words, so that the reader feels what it is like to be in
your presence, inside your mind or heart. It is also created by the stories,
memories and human moments you tap into. These stories motivate, inspire and
excite your readers.

As you can see,
your book or ebook is not just another product. It is the expression of who
you are and what you offer the world.
Writing such a book demands that you dive into your
unconscious, listen to your Soul and bring its silent song to the surface.

Business experts like to say that you should write a book
as if you were talking to the reader. I disagree. You should write a book as
if you were dancing in the heart of the reader. A talk is quickly forgotten.
A shared dance, a whisper to the soul, is not.
Writing a book with a heart is not an easy process. Many good books are never written
because this process demands emotional courage and self-intimacy as the starting

Your expert book is the meaning of your life and service embedded
in the leaves of trees, sent out into the world carrying your truth, baring your
soul, bearing your gifts.
Your Book as
Ambassador
So what will your
ambassador say? What gifts will it present to humanity?
While knowing your
uniqueness and the gifts you bring to the world gives your book its
substance, in order for it to be you ambassador, you must focus on what your
readers need. You must place your finger on their pulse. Listening is an
essential skill in a writer.
I confess. I am an
eavesdropper. I shamelessly eavesdrop on cell phone conversations, dialogues
between people walking besides me or waiting in the train station. I read
blogs, profiles, surveys and other social communication media. I ask
questions, sometimes from strangers! Some of my most striking metaphors,
stories and character development come from these incursions.
Think about it.
What is an ambassador? A diplomat. A specialist ~not only in communication~
but in human and social relationships. An ambassador's role is not only to
deliver a message. It is to understand the intricacies of human, social,
economic and political relationships so that she can deliver her country's
message effectively, so that her agenda is accepted. Your book must play
that role.
When a book calls
your readers to their humanity, connects them to each other and the planet,
helps them remember their basic goodness and cherish their loving encounters
as much as their human errors, it plays the role of ambassador.
Your book must
cherish and carry the voices, memories and stories of the people you wish to
address. Storytelling, case studies, archetypal characters, personal
anecdotes; they all serve this purpose.
Your Book as
Entry-level Product
Once your book
does its work as meaning and ambassador, it will bring a flow of people to
you. Some will be your readers, seeking additional offers from you. But many
will come because they heard about you or your book and want to know more.

They visit your
website, like your online presence and want to obtain your gifts. Will they
go for the four figure coaching program immediately? Only IF they have read
your book.
Those who have not
yet read your book will buy your
book first. Think about it. It's only about $25 dollars, but it will tell
them the following:
If your book
resonates with them, then they will want to buy your coaching program or
other services.

works and services. I want more of this author!

And that is what
you want to hear from your readers. You want them to come back, looking for
that CD, that DVD, that home study course or life coaching program.
The trust,
empathy, communion and gratitude that a book with a heart generates in your
clients is nothing short of miraculous. No marketing copy, no PR, and
definitely no business card come even close.
And that is why,
yes, you need to write a book in order to position yourself as an expert
among your peers, but above all, in the hearts of your potential clients. A
book, yes. But a book with a heart!
